Romania: Craiova Opens 2025 Christmas Market with Over 100,000 Visitors, Reclaims Spot Among Europe’s Top Holiday Destinations

Craiova officially opened its 2025 Christmas Market on Friday, 14 November, attracting more than 100,000 visitors, according to a statement from Mayor Lia Olguța Vasilescu. This year’s edition is themed “The Nutcracker,” drawing inspiration from the classic winter tale and transforming the entire city into a festive, storybook landscape.

Organized by the Craiova City Hall, the event spans six themed squares, each featuring distinctive décor and attractions:

  • Mihai Viteazul Square – “Candy Land”: a sugary-themed setting where Santa’s Flying Sleigh appears daily at 18:00
  • Doljana Area – “Carousel Christmas”: illuminated carousels and light installations
  • Frații Buzești Square – “Traditional Christmas”: Romanian carols, crafts and gastronomy
  • William Shakespeare Square – “Santa’s Land”: train rides, VR experiences and a panoramic wheel
  • Theodor Aman Street – “Best Christmas Street Food”: traditional and contemporary culinary stands
  • English Park – “Toyland”: fairy-tale characters and children’s decorations

The city is illuminated by more than two million lights, complemented by gingerbread-style huts that enhance the fairytale aesthetic.
