Jhonatan Narvaez Becomes First Ecuadorian to Win Tour Down Under

Jhonatan Narvaez of UAE Team Emirates claimed victory in the Tour Down Under on Sunday, becoming the first Ecuadorian to win the prestigious cycling race. The event concluded with the sixth and final stage, a 90-kilometer circuit in Adelaide, which was decided in a sprint finish won by Australian Sam Welsford (Red Bull-BORA).

Welsford completed the stage in 1:53:14, edging out France’s Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Germany’s Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious), both of whom crossed the finish line with the same time.

In the overall standings, Narvaez secured the top spot with a total time of 19:19:16. Spain’s Javier Romo (Movistar Team) finished nine seconds behind in second place, followed by New Zealand’s Finn Fisher-Black (Red Bull-BORA), who was 12 seconds off the pace.

Narvaez’s triumph marks a historic achievement for Ecuadorian cycling. He succeeds last year’s champion, Britain’s Stephen Williams (Israel-Premier Tech), and improves upon his own performance from the previous year when he finished second in the general classification.
