German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez have hailed the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, expressing hope for lasting peace and improved humanitarian conditions in the region.
Chancellor Scholz stated on Wednesday that the truce, which has been brokered after intense international diplomacy, could pave the way for an enduring end to hostilities in the Gaza Strip. “This ceasefire opens the door to a permanent end to the war and improvement of the precarious humanitarian situation in Gaza,” Scholz wrote on the platform X, emphasizing the need for the agreement to be “implemented to the letter.”
Similarly, Prime Minister Sánchez underscored the importance of the ceasefire as a step toward regional stability and the realization of a two-state solution. “This represents a critical milestone on the path to a just peace that respects international law,” he wrote on X. He further highlighted the urgency of addressing the grave humanitarian crisis in Gaza and securing the release of all hostages.
The agreement between Israel and Hamas marks the end of 15 months of devastating conflict, which has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths in Palestinian territories. According to a source involved in the talks, the deal includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
Negotiations were mediated by Qatar, the United States, and Egypt, with the breakthrough reportedly occurring during meetings in Doha between Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani and negotiators from both sides.
This development arrives just days before the scheduled return of Donald Trump to the White House, adding a layer of geopolitical significance to the timing of the deal.
