Federal Reserve Begins First Meeting Under Trump’s Second Term Amid Interest Rate Tensions

The Federal Reserve’s monetary policy committee (FOMC) convened on Tuesday for its first meeting since the start of Donald Trump’s second term as U.S. President. Trump has already signaled his readiness to publicly disagree with the Fed’s decisions on interest rates, according to AFP.

The two-day meeting began at 8:30 a.m. local time (13:30 GMT) as scheduled, confirmed a spokesperson for the institution. Analysts expect the central bank to maintain the current benchmark interest rate level, based on market forecasts.

The Fed is set to announce its official decision on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. local time (19:00 GMT), followed by a press conference held by Chair Jerome Powell.

Context and Challenges Facing the Fed

The Federal Reserve meets every six weeks for two days to determine whether to adjust its key interest rate, which directly impacts borrowing costs for businesses and consumers. The central bank seeks to balance its mandate of curbing inflation while sustaining economic growth and minimizing unemployment.

Over the past three meetings, the Fed has reduced interest rates by a total of one percentage point. These adjustments follow a significant decline in inflation, which peaked at 9.5% annually in June 2022. Despite this progress, inflation remains above the Fed’s target, and markets predict no further rate cuts until at least March.

Maintaining the benchmark rate within its current range of 4.25%-4.50% may draw criticism from President Trump, who, in his first week back in office, demanded immediate rate cuts. “If I disagree with them, I will say so,” Trump warned.

Fed’s Independence Tested

Although the Federal Reserve operates independently from political influence, its leadership is nominated by the executive branch. In 2017, Trump appointed Jerome Powell as Fed Chair, only to later criticize him.

As the Fed navigates economic challenges under heightened political scrutiny, the balance between preserving its autonomy and addressing political pressures will likely remain a focal point.
